After witnessing the NFL Combine, it’s challenging to justify the Dallas Cowboys selecting a running back with the 12th overall pick. Nevertheless, given the team’s need for a running back and their history of drafting the position early, the buzz surrounding Ashton Jeanty is substantial.
Jeanty didn’t participate in the Combine workouts, but his measurements revealed a 5-8, 211-pound frame. Although the Boise State standout is a more skilled runner than athlete, his decision to opt out of the Combine is understandable, considering his consensus RB1 status in the class. Jeanty is expected to showcase his abilities at his upcoming pro day, with the date yet to be determined.
Despite not meeting with Jeanty formally at the Combine, the Cowboys are reportedly interested in the running back. ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler revealed that Jeanty will be a Top 30 visit for the Cowboys, while team writer Patrik Walker suggested that Jeanty might instead be a Dallas Day visit. This confirms that the Cowboys will meet with Jeanty before the draft in April.
It’s also worth noting that Jeanty received “encouraging results” from his Combine medicals, according to Fowler. This is significant, as poor medical results can negatively impact a prospect’s stock. Fowler reported that Jeanty’s elbow injury from last season is not a long-term concern, which bodes well for his draft prospects.
