The 2025 NFL Draft is scheduled to begin on Thursday in Green Bay, and while the Detroit Lions are ready to bring in another key player with the No. 28 overall pick, the team might also part ways with one of their emerging talents.
As reported by Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, certain individuals he has talked to within the NFL think that the Lions might trade wide receiver Jameson Williams soon.
Breer mentioned another location for the receiver, noting that with a fifth-year option decision looming for Jameson Williams, some in NFL circles think he might be traded.
Detroit might be open to parting ways with Williams due to some off-the-field problems at the beginning of his career, coupled with the fact that he is expected to earn approximately $15.4 million on his fifth-year option, a cost general manager Brad Holmes may be reluctant to cover.
The situation escalated when Williams shared several enigmatic messages on his Instagram story. He also discontinued following the Lions on the social media platform.
Should Williams be traded, CBS Sports’ Bryan DeArdo names the Dallas Cowboys as a possible destination for the young wideout.
Many mock drafts predict that the Cowboys will use the No. 1 overall pick to choose Texas receiver Matthew Golden. However, if they are on the verge of obtaining Williams, Dallas might opt to use that selection to strengthen either the cornerback position or the offensive line, which are also in need of assistance. On paper, Williams would nicely complement CeeDee Lamb, much like he did with Lions All-Pro Amon-Ra St. Brown in 2024.
Following two unimpressive seasons in the league, Williams experienced a breakout year in 2024. The previous Alabama star recorded 58 catches for 1,001 yards and seven touchdowns over 15 games last season. The 24-year-old is among the most exciting and lively young playmakers in football and has yet to hit his peak.
Dallas needs to bring in another proficient receiver for quarterback Dak Prescott, since CeeDee Lamb cannot handle everything alone. Williams would create a dynamic pairing with Lamb, adding another dangerous option to the Cowboys’ offense.
Nonetheless, trading for Williams carries certain risks. The 2022 No.12 draft choice has not yet demonstrated reliability in his career, and Dallas might be reluctant to offer him a wealthy contract extension going forward. Spotrac estimates that Williams’ new contract will total $59 million across three years, averaging about $19.7 million per year.
Williams joining the Cowboys would be interesting, yet we still struggle to accept that he won’t be on the Lions roster in 2025, since Detroit still requires him for a Super Bowl push.
