In a heartwarming display of camaraderie and paying it forward, Detroit Lions starter, Amani Hooker, has been helping his former Iowa teammate, Kaevon Merriweather, prepare for the NFL combine.
Hooker, a safety who was drafted by the Tennessee Titans in 2020 but signed with the Lions as a free agent in 2022, has been putting Merriweather through a series of drills and workouts designed to simulate the combine experience.
“I just wanted to give back and help out a teammate,” Hooker said. “Kaevon is a talented player, and I know he’s going to do great things at the next level. If I can help him in any way, I’m happy to do so.”
Merriweather, a defensive back who played alongside Hooker at Iowa, is grateful for the guidance and support he’s receiving from his former teammate.
“Amani has been a huge help,” Merriweather said. “He’s been through the combine process before, so he knows what to expect. He’s been giving me tips and advice on how to prepare, and we’ve been working out together to get me ready.”
Hooker’s mentorship has not only helped Merriweather prepare physically for the combine but also mentally. The two teammates have been working on visualization techniques and other mental preparation strategies to help Merriweather stay focused and composed under pressure.
“It’s not just about the physical preparation,” Hooker said. “The combine is a mental grind, too. You’ve got to be able to stay focused and composed, even when you’re tired or under pressure. I’ve been trying to help Kaevon develop those mental toughness skills, so he can perform at his best when it counts.”
As Merriweather prepares to take the next step in his football career, he’s grateful to have Hooker in his corner, offering guidance and support every step of the way.
“Amani is more than just a teammate,” Merriweather said. “He’s a brother, a mentor, and a friend. I’m lucky to have him in my life, and I know he’s going to be there to support me every step of the way.”
