A Personal Mission
“This is personal for me,” Davis said during an emotional press conference at the Dean Smith Center. “Growing up, I saw too many young people fall through the cracks because they didn’t have a stable home. I’ve been blessed with opportunities through basketball and education. It’s my responsibility to give back and create safe spaces for kids who need them the most.”
Davis revealed that he had quietly begun working on the project last year. The 12,000-square-foot estate, which previously served as a private residence, will be renovated to accommodate up to 50 homeless and at-risk youth, providing them with housing, meals, counseling, educational support, and life skills training.
Addressing a Critical Need
According to the latest data from the North Carolina Coalition to End Homelessness, more than 3,000 youth experience homelessness in the state each year, many without access to consistent support systems. Advocates say the crisis is often invisible, with young people moving between temporary housing, shelters, and unsafe living situations.
“R.J.’s initiative couldn’t come at a better time,” said Jessica Martinez, director of Carolina Youth Services. “We are seeing an alarming increase in youth homelessness post-pandemic. The shelter will be more than a roof over their heads—it will be a lifeline.”
The mansion, located in a secluded yet accessible area of the Triangle region, offers ample space for a multi-purpose facility. Plans include:

Davis is funding the project with his own earnings, endorsement deals, and through a partnership with the R.J. Davis Foundation, a nonprofit he founded earlier this year. The foundation will manage the shelter in collaboration with local government and established nonprofit organizations.
