Sony Music Vision (in collaboration with Sony Music Entertainment UK and Epic Records) has officially announced production on The Ballad of Judas Priest, co-directed by renowned rock documentarian Sam Dunn and Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine (making his debut as a film director)
Spanning the band’s 1969 formation in Birmingham to their global influence today, the film promises an in‑depth, uncensored portrayal of Judas Priest’s over 50‑year legacy Expect coverage of pivotal moments such as the infamous 1980s “subliminal messages” trial, Rob Halford’s groundbreaking coming-out as a gay man in the late ’90s, and the band’s enduring resilience and innovation
The doc features classic hits like “Breaking the Law” and “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’,” and emphasizes how Priest not only shaped heavy metal sonically and visually—but also championed inclusivity within the genre The band themselves describe the film as a raw, unfiltered revelation: “the cassock comes off, revealing Priest in all its metal glory”
Produced by Banger Films (Dunn’s company), with executive production from Morello, Rick Krim, Sheila Stepanek, Jayne Andrews, along with Epic’s Sylvia Rhone—and distributed by Sony Music Vision—the project is positioned as a significant cultural statement
Although there’s no firm release date yet, production is underway, and anticipation is building, especially among longtime fans .
