We still have little information regarding the Detroit Lions’ schedule for the 2025 NFL season.
Up to now, what we’ve discovered is that the Lions will not participate in an international matchup and they also will not face the Philadelphia Eagles in the season opener of the NFL.
That was a possible date the team was focused on, with Amon-Ra St. Brown requesting the opening game right after the Eagles secured the Super Bowl.
It appears he’s not the sole Lions player who believed the team earned that matchup.
Once it was revealed that the Dallas Cowboys would face the Eagles in the opening matchup, Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold expressed his thoughts on this league decision via social media.
There is certainly value in pairing the Eagles and Cowboys in Week 1.
They maintain a long-established rivalry as competitors in the NFC East. Both are also anticipated to be vying against each other and the Commanders for the division’s top position in 2025.
Nonetheless, the game itself isn’t quite as captivating as a contest between the Eagles and Lions might have been in Week 1.
As the Eagles progressed towards the Super Bowl in 2024, the Cowboys were battling their way to a 7-10 record.
Dak Prescott’s absence for nine games undoubtedly contributed to their difficulties, but they also managed a 3-5 record with him starting.
In the meantime, the Lions finished 15-2 in 2024 even with numerous injuries accumulating over the season.
They’ll be nearly back to full strength at the beginning of the 2025 season, which should position them as a leading contender for the Eagles’ title.
Fortunately, we will eventually witness the teams face off at some stage this season, but the Lions seem like they would have presented a more interesting challenge for the Eagles to start the 2025 NFL season.
